November 2021’s Beaver Moon Lunar Eclipse

Hello, I’m back with more full moon facts!
Did you see the partial lunar eclipse on November 19th? The Earth’s shadow covered about 97% of the full moon that night and it could be viewed from Japan!

Partial lunar eclipse is 部分月食 in Japanese.

Partial means not completely. (97% this time)

Lunar means moon.

Eclipse means to cover or block light (the sun’s light in this situation) with an object.

The Earth partially blocked the sun’s light from reaching the moon.

It didn’t completely cover the moon (almost! 97%) so it’s not a total lunar eclipse.

Total lunar eclipse is 皆既月食 in Japanese.

But it turned the moon into a red color. It changes to a red color for the same reason that the sky turns red, orange, or purple during sunrise and sunset.

A total lunar eclipse is also called a blood moon because it turns very red during the eclipse.
November’s eclipse was not a blood moon because it was not 100% covered, but it still became very very red and beautiful.

November’s full moon also has a special name in North American culture. It’s called the Beaver Moon. The animal, beaver, is simply ビーバー in Japanese. Beavers are common in many parts of North America and they build little houses in the rivers.
November is the time they go back into their homes after gathering for food to prepare for the winter so the Native Americans gave the November full moon the beaver name.

If you missed the lunar eclipse this time, I highly recommend you search for some photos on the internet. Please search “November 2021 lunar eclipse photos” on your PC or smartphone’s web browser to find some really beautiful photos.
There are many great photos on many different websites but I especially recommend this one to see the eclipse from many different cities around the world:
