MORE THAN SMALL TALK

ちょっとした会話もこれを読めば広げていけますよ

Wondering how to keep conversations going?
Ask follow-up questions, and try these techniques:

  • Pay attention – listen well to what the other person is saying.

まずはよく話を聞いてみましょう。

  • Probe – ask follow-up questions and base them on what the other person said.

その話に基づいた質問をしてみましょう。

  • Ask for details – Instead of asking Yes/No questions (e.g. Was your holiday fun?), try asking WH questions (e.g. How was your holiday?).

Yes/Noクエスチョンよりもオープンクエスチョン(なぜ/どんななど)を。

WH questions are what, when, where, how, who/whom/whose, why.

Sample Conversation:

A: Hi! How are you?

B: I’m great! I finally started my blog.

Examples of follow-up questions:

What’s your blog about?

Where did you get the inspiration to start blogging?

Why did you start blogging?

Who is helping you?

When did you start?

How do you produce content for the blog?

Can you think of other follow-up questions to this conversation?
